2020-21 CONCERT SEASON

LUMINESCENCE
May 8, 2021
Christ United Methodist Church, Plano

The Plano Chamber Chorus presented their finale to the 2020-2021 concert season with
Luminescence on May 8, 2021 at Christ United Methodist Church in Plano. The program featured two seldom heard works for double chorus by Mendelssohn and two works for women's chorus by Brahms. The men of the chorus were featured in Schubert's lovely Die Nacht. The concert also featured two modern day works by Norwegian composer, Ola Gjeilo: Dark Night of the Soul and Luminous Night of the Soul, both are composed for eight-part chorus, string quartet, and piano and both have quickly become beloved classics in the choral repertoire. The centerpiece of the concert was The Hope of Loving, a recent work by Minneapolis composer, Jake Runestad. Composed for chorus, soloists, and string quartet, The Hope of Loving examines our understanding of love with prose from poets Rabia, Hafiz, St. Francis, St. John of the Cross, and Eckhart. The concert concluded with a few popular works: I Am Not Yours by Z. Randall Stroope, Lullabye by Billy Joel, and Try to Remember from The Fantasticks by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt.

A Salute to 2020

The year 2020 was a difficult one for the performing arts community. Like most musical organizations, Plano Civic Chorus was unable to perform their spring 2020 concert and the rest of the scheduled season. However, with the support of Christ United Methodist Church in Plano, we had the good fortune of being able to perform a portion of our scheduled season, using a reduced-sized choir and following strict social distancing protocols. We would like to share with you highlights from these performances and recordings and thank you for your support of our organization through this difficult time. We are optimistic for the future, and look forward to making music for you again soon!
